Garajau has long been known to be one of Madeira’s high class residential areas and is named after the black-headed sea birds, terns, which nest in the cliffs.
The apartment is at the edge of the village - Villas do Quinta II Apartments. Beyond the apartments the road curves round the coastline to Caniço, the nearest large town.
The beautiful verdant island of Madeira (wood) is Portugal's "Jewel in the Atlantic" and is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Europe. Due to its volcanic origin, Madeira is very hilly, and the coast is steep and rocky, with high cliffs and deep valleys running down to the Atlantic and no sandy beaches. The island has a population of 245,000, and the language is Portuguese, although many speak excellent English, for tourism is the largest industry, and the English make up the majority of visitors. The cosmopolitan capital, Funchal, is alive with restaurants, bars, discotheques, and a casino. The landscape is covered in a green mantle of rich subtropical foliage. The variety and profusion of flowers makes the island a permanent flower show. Birds of Paradise, with their bright orange beak-like flowers, blossom in open fields. Fragrant hydrangeas line walking paths (levadas) that skirt the edge of mountain terraces.
Madeira’s greatest attraction has to be the subtropical climate, sometimes known as “the island of eternal spring”. Even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 17C, and rarely exceeds 23C in high summer. A haven of civilised peace, Madeira is a place of moderation in most things, where respect and old world manners have yet to become outdated. The people a gracious, helpful and friendly.
The landscape and vegetation, coupled with the ever friendly Madeirans and the appetizing food, combine to ensure that Madeira is a place of immense appeal which draws one back again and again.

Travel
We do not recommend booking car hire before leaving the UK, because if a car is needed it may only be for a few days rather than for the full week. Indeed you may decide when your arrive that you would prefer to use taxis or public transport.
Taxis will pick you up at the apartment, or a stroll away at the rank outside the Hotel Dom Pedro. Price to Funchal is approx Euro 11.00, or one may take a bus for about Euro 1.15 (less than 1 pound sterling), taking the old road into Funchal, a more interesting and exciting journey than the dual carriageway tunnels and highway recently constructed with EU money to speed up traffic.

Just below the town is a 200m high headland with a fine miradouro - a statue of Christ with outstretched arms, similar to the larger statues in Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sun go down and it has great views west to the Bay of Funchal. The coastline here at Garajau is also a conservation area, and was one of Europe’s first underwater nature reserves, providing sanctuary for whales, dolphins and seals.

Activities
Garajau is a good location from where one can hike and walk the islands amazing levada irrigation system spanning 2,500 kilometres, which meander round the mountains. One of the reasons we do not recommend car hire is because a local company does such good excursion trips and walks and many of our guests find this a more relaxing way of seeing the island. Please see our website for more details, link below.
Golf
Golfers will be pleased to know that the new 18-hole Palheiro golf course is no more than a 20 minute drive. Classic Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys have all been incorporated into the terrain to produce a dramatically interesting course, with stunning views. The spectacular 27-hole Santo da Serra golf course [also known as Campo de Golfe and home to the Madeira Island Open ] is also within easy reach. This is Madeira’s oldest golf course. It sits high up on a plateau and is marvellously scenic with inspirational views back up the mountains and out over the Atlantic below. For more details please see our website, link below.
Further Details
Garajau’s high street combines the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau on one side of the road and a multitude of shops, bakeries, coffee shop, ice cream parlours and a few patisseries, and a medium sized well stocked mini-markets with ATM outside, several restaurants, bars and apartments on the other. Our apartment is not in this area. It is further down the village towards Caniço.
